The Institute of the Good Shepherd, whose erection was directly and explicitly willed by His Holiness, Benedict XVI, is a community of Apostolic Life. Its principal charism is the apostolate which draws its strength from the Roman Liturgy in its venerable Classical Form. It is exactly "this Extra-ordinary Roman Form" which the Pope, in his role as Father of the Family, bringing forth from his treasure both new and old (Mt. 13:52), shows, once again, the entire Church the wonderful treasure that is true Tradition, by the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum.

We believe that the creation of the Institute of the Good Shepherd was expressly willed by the Holy Ghost not so that it might be an end in itself, but so that it might show itself to be an instrument of the Church in the New Evangelization wherever there should be need.

The priests and the brothers of the Institute of the Good Shepherd help the Bishops in their realization of their apostolic mission. In a special manner, in as much as cooperatores veritatis, or co-workers of the truth, they will work to transmit a faith whole and healthy, above all to those who are attached to the traditional forms of piety and prayer.

This ministry realized by the Institute of the Good Shepherd is to be had before all by a good sacerdotal formation, based upon the classic precepts of spirituality, of discipline and of ascetic exercises. It is also reinforced by a particular attachment to the Classical Rite of the Roman Liturgy, which is "the Rite proper of the Institute", according to its statutes.

The Institute of the Good Shepherd is part of a large family "of Living Tradition" which is lead by the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei whose current head is His Excellency Dario Cardinal Castrill??n Hoyos.
